Direct answerWhat it is and where it fits

Robot cell guarding separates people from hazardous robot movement and associated process risks. The correct architecture can combine perimeter fencing, interlocked or guard-locked gates, light curtains, safety laser scanners, safe stopping functions and controlled restart logic.

Where it fits

Typical applications

A project-specific assessment confirms the final design, but robot cell guarding is commonly used for:

  • 01Palletising and depalletising robots
  • 02Machine tending cells
  • 03Welding and fabrication robots
  • 04Pick-and-place automation
  • 05Packaging and case handling cells
  • 06Collaborative robot applications requiring additional safeguards

Configuration

Designed around the environment and access task.

The physical form is selected after the hazard, safe distance, containment, hygiene and maintenance needs are understood.

Mesh perimeter systems

Solid or screened process panels

Guard-locked access doors

Light-curtain loading openings

Safety scanner zones

Reset and request-to-enter stations

Engineering method

How we develop the solution.

01

Map every operating mode

Consider automatic production, teach, setting, maintenance, recovery and manual loading.

02

Assess robot and process hazards

Include the robot envelope, tooling, payload, ejection, heat, welding, sharp parts and adjacent machinery.

03

Select the safeguarding concept

Combine separation, safe distance, stopping functions, monitored access and safe restart controls.

04

Validate the integrated cell

Check safety functions, stopping behaviour, gate logic, reset position and prevention of unexpected restart.

Project scope

Typical deliverables

Deliverables are confirmed in the quotation so responsibilities and interfaces remain clear.

Technical questions

Robot Cell Guarding FAQs

Answers are general; the machine-specific assessment controls the final design.

Does a collaborative robot always operate without guarding?

No. Collaborative operation is an application characteristic, not simply a robot label. Tooling, payload, speed, force, workpiece and surrounding equipment can create hazards that require guarding or other protective measures.

Can operators load a robot cell through a light curtain?

Yes, where the risk assessment, stopping performance, safety distance and control logic support that approach. Muting or blanking may be required for some material-flow applications and must be engineered carefully.

What prevents restart when someone enters the cell?

A suitable system may use guard locking, safety-rated monitoring, presence sensing, trapped-key control and a reset position with clear visibility. The exact arrangement depends on the cell and access pattern.
