Clear machine guarding

Clear polycarbonate machine guards with engineered retention and access.

Clear guarding can improve observation, fault finding and process control, but the panel is only one part of the safety system. We design the frame, thickness, edge support, fixings, doors, openings and maintenance access so visibility does not compromise protection.

Direct answerWhat should be considered when specifying polycarbonate guards?

What should be considered when specifying polycarbonate guards?

Polycarbonate is a tough transparent thermoplastic widely used for industrial guarding where visibility and impact resistance are important. The design must consider likely impact energy, panel span, thickness, chemical exposure, scratching, temperature, UV, fire behaviour, edge retention and how the guard could be removed. It should not be treated as a universal substitute for mesh, steel or specialist containment panels.

Where this solution is used

Designed around the machine and the work people perform.

The scope is developed from actual access, process and maintenance needs rather than a standard panel count.

01

Machine observation windows

Maintain visibility of tooling, product flow or inspection points while preventing access to dangerous parts.

02

Full or partial enclosures

Create bright, enclosed cells around compact automation, packaging, test or assembly machinery.

03

Replace damaged clear panels

Survey and reproduce worn, cracked or opaque panels while checking fixings, openings and the wider guarding condition.

Engineering decisions

What must be resolved before manufacture or modification.

These decisions interact. A change to stopping, door use, material flow or maintenance can alter the complete safeguarding concept.

  1. 01

    Impact and containment

Define whether the panel is preventing reach, resisting foreseeable impact or containing ejected parts and process material.

  2. 02

    Panel thickness and span

Size panels with regard to unsupported dimensions, frame stiffness, loading and long-term deflection.

  3. 03

    Fixing and retention

Use suitable captured or retained fixings so a panel cannot be easily displaced or removed without the intended method.

  4. 04

    Visibility and finish

Consider anti-scratch options, tint, glare, cleaning and how operators need to see the process.

  5. 05

    Chemical and temperature exposure

Check compatibility with oils, coolants, solvents, cleaning agents, heat and outdoor UV where applicable.

  6. 06

    Access and interlocking

Separate frequent access tasks into properly hinged or sliding doors with suitable safety functions rather than repeatedly removing panels.

Site and application review

Information we assess.

  • Impact energy and ejection risk
  • Panel grade and certification
  • Thickness and unsupported span
  • Edge support and gasket design
  • Cleaning and chemical compatibility
  • Scratch resistance and replacement plan
  • Openings, gaps and safety distances
  • Interlock and door alignment

Typical project scope

What Oxford Machine Guarding can provide.

Deliverables are agreed before work starts. We can support a defined component or take responsibility from site survey through design, installation and documented handover.

  • Measured replacement or new-guard survey
  • Panel material and thickness specification
  • Frame and retention design
  • CNC-cut apertures and service interfaces
  • Door, hinge and handle design
  • Interlock or guard-locking integration
  • Installation and alignment checks
  • Replacement-panel records where agreed
