Welded mesh
Mesh is robust, ventilated and economical for perimeter systems. Aperture and distance must work together to prevent reach. It provides limited containment of small particles, liquids or arc light.
Polycarbonate
Clear polycarbonate offers strong visibility and impact resistance. Thickness, grade, chemical exposure, heat, UV and scratch conditions should be checked. Fixing design should allow safe replacement.
Solid steel sheet
Solid sheet provides privacy and containment for swarf, sparks or process material. It can reduce visibility and ventilation, so windows or extraction interfaces may be needed.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel suits hygienic, wet or corrosive environments. The grade, finish, weld detail, fasteners and crevices matter as much as the base material.
Composite designs
Many successful guards use a solid lower section, mesh upper panel and clear viewing window. Combining materials can optimise containment, reach prevention and operator visibility.
Frame and fixings
The panel is only as effective as its frame, fixings and gaps. Consider impact load, panel retention, removable sections, door sag and how damage will be detected.

How Oxford Machine Guarding can help
We can survey the equipment, define the guarding and safety-system scope, develop the design, supply and install the solution, and provide testing and handover records appropriate to the agreed project boundary.
This guide provides general technical information. It is not a substitute for a machine-specific risk assessment, legal advice or verification by the responsible dutyholder.
