Direct answerWhat it is and where it fits

A safety laser scanner monitors a defined area using a rotating optical scan. It can provide one or more safety-rated protective fields and warning fields, making it useful where open access, changing zones or wide-area presence detection is required.

Page focus: This page focuses on scanner application geometry: floor fields, access routes, warning zones, mounting and environmental constraints. For control logic, field switching, reset and validation, see the dedicated integration page. View scanner controls and integration →

Where it fits

Typical applications

A project-specific assessment confirms the final design, but safety laser scanners is commonly used for:

  • 01Open robot-cell loading zones
  • 02Automated guided vehicles and mobile robots
  • 03Wide machine-access areas
  • 04Transfer stations
  • 05Dynamic zone applications
  • 06Presence detection inside guarded areas

Configuration

Designed around the environment and access task.

The physical form is selected after the hazard, safe distance, containment, hygiene and maintenance needs are understood.

Multiple field sets

Warning and protective zones

Static or speed-dependent fields

Horizontal or vertical mounting

Safe network integration where supported

Protective housings and mounting kits

Engineering method

How we develop the solution.

01

Map the monitored area

Identify approach paths, reflective surfaces, obstacles, floor conditions and foreseeable bypass routes.

02

Define field logic

Configure protective and warning zones around the hazard, stopping distance and operational states.

03

Integrate safely

Connect scanner outputs or safe communications into a suitable safety control architecture.

04

Verify every field set

Test field boundaries, switching conditions, response times, restart behaviour and environmental robustness.

Technical questions

Safety Laser Scanners FAQs

Answers are general; the machine-specific assessment controls the final design.

What is the difference between a safety scanner and a standard lidar sensor?

A safety laser scanner is designed and certified for defined protective functions. A general lidar sensor may provide useful measurement data but is not automatically suitable for a machine safety function.

Can one scanner monitor several zones?

Many safety scanners support multiple configurable field sets. Selection and switching logic must be part of the safety design and validated for all operating states.

Will dust or reflective surfaces affect a scanner?

Environmental conditions can affect optical devices. The survey considers contamination, sunlight, reflections, floor level and cleaning so the selected device and mounting are appropriate.
