Measure stopping performance
Determine the total response and stopping time under representative conditions.
Protective-device selection
Non-contact access protection for machine openings, loading points and production interfaces where a physical door is impractical.
A safety light curtain creates a monitored optical field. When the field is interrupted, the safety system initiates a stop or prevents hazardous operation. Correct application depends on detection capability, stopping time, mounting position, reach prevention and control-system performance.
Where it fits
A project-specific assessment confirms the final design, but safety light curtains is commonly used for:
Configuration
The physical form is selected after the hazard, safe distance, containment, hygiene and maintenance needs are understood.
Engineering method
Determine the total response and stopping time under representative conditions.
Set the safety distance using the applicable method and consider reach-over, reach-under and side access.
Define stop category, reset, restart prevention, EDM and muting or blanking logic where needed.
Check alignment, response, bypass prevention, reset location and behaviour across all operating modes.

Deliverables are confirmed in the quotation so responsibilities and interfaces remain clear.

Answers are general; the machine-specific assessment controls the final design.
Sometimes. It is suitable only where the hazard can be stopped before a person can reach it and where material ejection, heat, radiation or other process hazards do not require a physical barrier.
Resolution, often described as detection capability, is the minimum object size the protective field is designed to detect. It influences the permissible mounting distance and application.
Muting is the temporary, automatically controlled suspension of the protective function to permit defined material movement. It requires a carefully designed sensor sequence and safety logic.
