Project evidence

Safety Validation & Documentation

Validation provides evidence that the implemented guarding and safety functions meet defined requirements. Documentation makes that evidence usable after installation.

Direct answer

What should validation demonstrate?

That the physical guards, protective devices, safety logic and final machine outputs perform the defined safety functions under relevant operating, demand and fault conditions.

Validation should be planned from written requirements, not improvised after the installation is complete.

01

Requirements

Safe state, initiating condition, zone, modes, response, reset, restart and fault behaviour.

02

Design evidence

Layouts, circuits, components, calculations, logic descriptions and configuration records.

03

Test evidence

Functional demand, timing, sequence, fault insertion, result, issue and corrective action.

04

Handover

As-built information, final status, maintenance points and future change-control basis.

Typical test questions

Does the system behave correctly when demanded—and when something fails?

  • Does each guard or protective device affect the correct hazard and zone?
  • Is the safe condition reached and maintained for the required duration?
  • Can the machine restart unexpectedly after closing, reset or power restoration?
  • Are relevant wiring, device and final-element faults detected?
  • Do manual, teach, automatic and recovery modes behave as specified?
  • Are stopping-time assumptions and protective-device positions supported?
